How to Layer Your Gilet

A gilet gives you core warmth without restricting arm movement — ideal for high-output activities like beating, picking, or walking where you're generating your own heat. When your arms stay active but your torso needs an extra layer, a gilet is the smarter choice over a full-sleeve fleece or jacket.

Gilet vs. Full-Sleeve Layer

Reach for a gilet when you're moving steadily and your arms aren't losing heat quickly. A fleece jacket or sleeved layer makes more sense in colder, more static conditions — standing at a peg, watching on a cold day, or when temperatures are low enough that arm coverage genuinely matters. In milder autumn or early winter conditions, many countryside workers find a gilet alone is enough once they're in motion.

Layering Over a Base Layer
